Software Engineer Intern, Computational Imaging & Display(PhD Univ Student)

Interns & Co-Ops, University, Internship - Engineering, Tech & Design | Menlo Park, California

Oculus is a world leader in the design of virtual reality systems. We are currently seeking innovative interns with a passion for technology to develop next-generation head-mounted display and imaging systems at Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, CA. These roles are focused on developing computational imaging methods that leverage the co-design of optical elements and image processing algorithms. In particular we welcome PhD students in computer science, optical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or similar, with a strong background in prototyping camera, sensing, and display hardware.

Our internships are twelve (12) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Responsibilities

  • Develop next-generation head-mounted display and camera prototypes
  • Explore the application of computational imaging methods to virtual reality, emphasizing the development of advanced simulations, algorithms, and hardware capabilities
  • Collaborate with the larger Oculus team and provide creative leadership on computational display and imaging technologies

Minimum Qualification

  • Pursuing a PhD degree in the field of Computer Science, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field
  • Currently enrolled in a full time degree program and returning to the program after the completion of the internship
  • 1+ years experience with solving inverse problems in imaging emphasizing modeling, algorithm development, and hardware prototyping
  • Demonstrated ability in optical design and modeling methods (e.g., proficiency with Matlab, Zemax, Code V, or similar)
  • 1+ years experience with experimental optics and conducting laboratory work (i.e., demonstrated ability to construct proof-of-concept systems and to evaluate performance)
  • 2+ years experience with scientific programming languages such as Matlab, Python, Mathematica, or similar
  • Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • Ability to obtain work authorization in the United States in 2018

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with C/C++, OpenGL/DirectX, and OpenCL/CUDA
  • Experience with mathematical optimization, including software libraries and implementation from first principles
  • Demonstrated experience via an internship, work experience, or widely used contributions to open source projects
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications (e.g., SIGGRAPH/Eurographics, CVPR/ICCV/ECCV, Optics Express, etc.)
