Postdoctoral Research Scientist, Multimodal Synthesis (PhD University Grad)

Oculus is a world leader in the design of virtual reality systems. We are currently seeking innovative researchers with a passion for technology to develop next-generation head-mounted display and imaging systems at our research location in Pittsburgh, PA. This role is focused on multimodal synthesis research for producing social behavior that is indistinguishable from reality. The position is a fixed-term (postdoctoral) contract for 24 months and requires a PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or similar, and a strong background in delivering research prototypes.


  • Develop next-generation audio and video synthesis algorithms
  • Explore the application of computer vision and signal processing techniques to virtual and augmented reality, emphasizing the development of advanced hardware capabilities
  • Collaborate with the larger Oculus Research team and provide creative leadership on audio and video technologies
  • Mentor MS/PhD interns and collaborate with external academic groups to advance our research goals
  • Publish research results in top-tier journals and at leading international conferences

Minimum Qualification

  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree or completing a postdoctoral assignment in the field of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field
  • Must be available to start employment on or after December 1, 2017
  • Experience in numerical optimization and machine learning
  • 2+ years experience with scientific programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, Mathematica, or similar
  • 2+ years experience with C/C++, or similar
  • Proven track record of achieving results, including, first-authored journal publications
  • Interpersonal skills with cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • Able to obtain work authorization in the US for a two-year period beginning in 2017

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences such as SIGGRAPH, ICASSP, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, and NIPS
