At Oculus Research, we’re developing the future of virtual and augmented reality. Technology research enables us to develop new ways to build displays, audio, optics, and other AR and VR device components. We’re seeking a Technical Research Manager to manage a world class team of engineers and researchers and help them develop their careers, strategically focus their research efforts, and have the most impact possible on the future of VR and AR. The ideal candidate is an expert manager with extensive experience leading high performing industry research and development teams.


  • Supervise and lead a team of researchers and engineers who select possible technologies, develop research and development plans for building testable prototypes using those technologies, and transfer those technologies to incubation and product teams
  • Oversee collaborations with academic and industry partners to develop and test new technologies
  • Work with other project leads to develop a strategic plan for creating new external relationships to further our research
  • Hire and train researchers and engineers
  • Review research and development proposals and give feedback. Own the strategic technological research plan and ensure that individuals' and teams' work is aligned to it
  • Participate in team leadership, long-term strategic project, headcount, and budget planning
  • Ensure that proper processes are developed and followed for technology research and development

Minimum Qualification

  • PhD in mechanical, electrical, or materials engineering, chemistry, or physics, or equivalent industry experience
  • 10+ years of experience in management of high-performing teams in research or advanced development, academic research and industrial prototype research and development

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working and managing in a fast-paced hardware development or rapid prototyping environment
  • Background in building prototypes for use in perceptual research or other psychological, medical, or sociological research under IRB process
