Research Scientist – Cognition

Research | Redmond, Washington

We are looking for a Cognitive Scientist with expertise in computational models of decision making, planning, working memory, learning/adaption and attention.Experience in psychophysical studies to test such models is also essential. As a Cognitive Scientist at Oculus Research in Redmond WA, you would focus on developing the scientific knowledge required for designing and evaluating how people interact with augmented reality hardware and software systems. We are committed to a whole-system approach to development of AR technology with an understanding of the human perceptual-cognitive-motor system at the center. Our research involves both fundamental research on perception and cognition and research on how specific engineering choices will impact the user experience. Researchers will have opportunities to collaborate with academic institutions and publish in peer-reviewed journals. Projects take advantage of internal resources in mechanical, electrical, optical, and software engineering, allowing us to confront scientific questions which cannot be addressed with existing equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and test models of human performance on tasks where the information available to the user include both real and virtual auditory, haptic and/or visual content
  • Determine methods to incorporate knowledge/models of human working memory, attention and decision making into algorithms that decide what information the user needs for a given task
  • Design and perform experiments to establish what information the AR device needs from the user and the environment to usefully exploit what we know about working memory, decision making, attention and planning
  • Collaborate with both internal teams and academic institutions to explore and discover cognitive factors that offer revolutionary improvement in AR technology
  • Collaborate with other scientists and engineers to identify and develop experimental systems which allow us to answer novel research questions related to human interaction with AR technology

Minimum Qualification

  • PhD and/or postdoctoral assignment in cognitive science/psychology, bioengineering, or related field
  • Understanding of human cognition, learning/adaptation and decision making, including the ability to develop computational models that can generalize and predict behavior and percepts in novel environments
  • Knowledgeable in modelling dynamic systems including Kalman filters, Markov decision processes and machine learning and knowledge of Information Theory, Statistical Decision Theory and/or Graph Theory.
  • Proven track record of achieving significant research results

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with user studies and human factors
  • Prior experience with MATLAB, R, Python, and/or C++
