Research Scientist, Perceptual Quality and Efficient Coding

We are looking for scientists who research sensory encoding processes with an eye to informing efficient coding of the visual, auditory and haptic signals that drive experience in AR/VR. As a Perceptual Research Scientist at Oculus Research (Redmond, WA), you will focus on developing the scientific knowledge required for designing and evaluating VR hardware and software systems. We are committed to a whole-system approach to development of AR/VR technology with an understanding of the human perceptual-motor system. Our research involves both fundamental research on perception and research on how specific engineering choices will impact user experience. Researchers will have opportunities to both collaborate with academic institutions and publish in peer-reviewed journals. Projects take advantage of internal resources in mechanical, electrical, optical, and software engineering, allowing us to confront scientific questions which cannot be addressed with existing equipment.


  • Develop and implement perceptually informed data compression schemes for AR/VR systems
  • Design and perform psychophysical studies to evaluate the impact of data compression schemes on the quality of AR/VR experience
  • Develop perceptual quality metrics for AR/VR systems
  • Explore opportunities to create new virtual experiences and perform research necessary to deliver these while minimizing data requirements
  • Collaborate with both internal teams and academic institutions to explore and discover sensory/perceptual factors that offer opportunities to reduce data requirements with minimal impact on user experience
  • Collaborate with other scientists and engineers to identify and develop experimental systems which allow us to answer novel research questions

Minimum Qualification

  • PhD and/or postdoctoral assignment in Perception Science/Psychology, Bioengineering, Computer Science or related field
  • Understanding of visual, audio and/or haptic sensory encoding processes and how these signals interact in human spatial perception
  • 2+ years of training and/or experience in signal compression and perceptual quality metrics
  • 5+ years of training and/or experience with Experimental Methodology, Pychophysics, and/or related Statistical Analysis
  • Prior experience with C++, Python, MATLAB and/or R, Python
  • Proven track record of achieving significant research results
  • Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • Able to obtain work authorization in the US beginning in 2017

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with user studies and human factors
  • Understanding of multi-modal sensory encoding processes, including visual, auditory and haptic pathways
