Optical Design Engineer

Oculus is looking for a very experienced and highly self-motivated optical designer to design, simulate, implement and debug the optical systems used in virtual reality headsets. You will develop Camera Lens system specifications and test methods, perform performance evaluation, and work closely with manufacturing partners for prototyping and mass production.


  • Ownership of design and implementation of viewing optics in Oculus products.
  • Work closely with hardware industry partners to identify, define, develop, test, and deploy state of the art optical technologies for virtual reality hardware products.
  • Work closely with the internal display, perceptual psychology, electrical, mechanical, software and vision teams to develop optical system specifications, perform in-depth performance analysis and debug system-level issues.
  • Invent new viewing optics structures for future virtual reality products, develop requirements, and translate these into deployable virtual reality products.
  • Change the landscape of capabilities of virtual reality hardware.

Minimum Qualification

  • Experience in Ophthalmic Optics design.
  • Experience with plastic and glass optical material.
  • Experience in Stray Light Molding and analysis.
  • Experience developing Human Vision Systems.
  • Experience in Complex optical system simulation and molding.
  • Experience in Optical lens fabrication.
  • Experience in at least one optical design software package (e.g. Zemax, CODE V, LightTools, FRED, ASAP) is required.
  • Experience in both sequential and non-sequential optical design software is required.
  • Interpersonal skill to work across teams.
  • Up to 15% domestic and international travel required.
  • BS degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related technical discipline with 10+ years of experience or advanced degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline with 5+ years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Communication skills in Mandarin.
  • Experience working with international manufacturing partners.
